The life sciences are the foundation of contemporary medical practice and education. They deal with the properties, structures and functions at all levels of the organism. The biomedical approach aims to provide systematic causal explanations based on scientific criteria. Today, the biomedical view of disease, risk and health is the dominant explanatory pattern of medicine in theory and practice. It determines both the thinking and decision-making processes in health care and health policy worldwide, as well as the basic understanding and behavioural expectations with regard to health and disease.
